Wilsons Promontory National Park To Re-Open

Wilsons Promontory National Park will re-open to visitors on Saturday March 21 after the fires in the park were brought under control over the weekend.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings announced the re-opening while inspecting the fire-affected areas of The Prom and meeting firefighters with Emergency Services Commissioner Bruce Esplin.

“Wilsons Promontory National Park is an icon for Victorian tourism and its great news that this fire has been stopped through the hard work of the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Parks Victoria and Country Fire Authority crews,” Mr Jennings said.

“Victorians should use this opportunity to be inspired by nature’s capacity for renewal,” said Mr Esplin.

Day visits will commence at 9am on Saturday 21 March, with free entry until Thursday 26 March to encourage visitors to return to one of Victoria’s most loved National Parks. Accommodation and camping will resume on Friday 27 March.

Tidal River, 30 kilometres inside the park, is the major focus for tourism and recreation in the region.

The main visitor areas of the park were not affected by fire. These include Tidal River, Norman Bay and Squeaky Beach. Walks include Norman Bay South Track, Tidal River Overlook Track and Pillar Point.

The rest of the Prom will re-open in stages when all the risk assessments have been completed and damaged infrastructure such as walking tracks and toilets are repaired.
