Protect yourself from Human Swine Flu

The Chief Health Officer of Victoria is issuing regular alerts for H1N1 Influenza 09 (Human Swine Flu), with information for GP's, hospital emergency departments, laboratories and the general public. This information can be downloaded from the health.vic.gov.au website.

How should I protect myself?

Good health hygiene practices can greatly reduce the chance you will get the flu or pass it on to others.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Throw the tissue in a plastic-lined rubbish bin after you use it.
  •  Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread that way.

If you have the flu, you should avoid public places and close contact with others, especially children.

The Australian Food and Grocery Council wants to insure that Australians should assess the amount of food and essential household items available in their pantries. They have issued this media release with relevant information for all Australians about how to ensure they have enough food and essential household items should they need to be quarantined. Further information is also available at The Pantry List.
