Taking Personal Responsibility
It is not possible for the emergency services to be everywhere at all times.
Individuals must learn how to protect themselves and their property during an emergency. Knowing where and how to access critical information, being prepared ahead of time and taking personal responsibility for your own safety can mean the difference between experiencing a scare or living through a tragedy.
Victoria's emergency services, in partnership with local government, schools and other community services conduct a wide range of educational programs across the state to help community members understand exactly what their responsibilities are and what they need to do in the event of an emergency.
The State Government also works in partnership with the media to ensure there are processes in place for disseminating critical safety information during an emergency. ABC Radio is the official emergency broadcaster in Victoria. Under an agreement with the State Government, ABC Radio will interrupt any program in an affected area to broadcast an emergency message as requested by Victoria's emergency services.
During an emergency it’s important to tune in to local radio or other forms of media to ensure you are able to access the latest information. Many emergency services websites also provide up-to-date real time information, and a number of hotlines may operate depending on the type of emergency occurring.
