Linton Bushfire
Linton, south west of Ballarat, was the scene of a tragedy on 2 December 1998, when five Country Fire Authority volunteer firefighters died after their tanker became trapped and destroyed by flames.
The accident occurred immediately following a wind change, as the crews of the tankers were attempting to gain access to a water point.
A Coronial Inquest was conducted into the tragedy, as well as a joint Country Fire Authority and Department of Sustainability and Environment Operations Review. Thirty-nine recommendations were implemented from the joint agency Operations Review, including the signing of a 'Safe Forest Firefighting' document committing both agencies to a range of future actions, as well as an enhanced formal agreement between both fire agencies governing joint operational and related matters.
The Linton tragedy resulted in significant measures being undertaken to better protect Victoria's firefighters.
